SunFun-Medications

sun fun march 2013Anything you put into your body could affect how your medications work.  . Medications are naturally broken down in our bodies by things called enzymes or removed using things called transporters or channels.  Teas, coffees, supplements, vitamins and special diets can change how enzymes and transporters work.  This can alter what your medications do or how long they affect your body.  Your normal medications may not work or may even harm you if taken with things like cough syrup or other medicines that you can buy without seeing your doctor.  Doctors call these medicines “over-the-counter” medicine (sometimes abbreviated “OTCs”) because you can simply buy them over the counter.  It is important that you talk to your doctor about what you eat, drink and what OTCs you take before starting any new medication.  Grapefruit juice, St. John’s Wart and Benadryl are just a few everyday things that have been shown to affect how many medications work.
