Spring is here! While in the North East, this means longer days, spring flowers, and warmer weather, in South Florida it means….heat heat heat, frizzy hair, and crazy random lightning strikes. But spring also brings a new season of fruits and vegetables, and Miami’s flourishing farmers’ market scene is jam-packed with delicious selections.
Farmers’ markets are an increasingly popular option for buying produce. The main feature of most markets is the locally grown produce – almost everything you buy is grown within a few hours of the market. This has the advantage of being more environmentally friendly and supportive of local jobs. South Florida has the added perk of being the nation’s top producer of fruits and vegetables – which means those kumquats, kiwis, and other ‘exotic’ fruits you see are actually grown locally! Farmers’ market goods are often cheaper than supermarket produce, not to mention riper, fresher, and frequently with fewer waxes or preservatives. Many farmers’ markets also offer organic produce, or produce that has been treated with fewer pesticides. For the even more adventurous, foraging is another option; Florida is a great place for digging up morels, ramps, and fiddleheads (don’t worry – I had to look those up on the Internet too).
