How to Start Eating Healthier Today!

Since we were kids, the pyramid and now, the new “plate” (Choose My Plate) have been trying to convince us to eat healthier. But where does one start?

Here are a couple of easy options:
 

  1. Start with fruit. Having piece of fruit at every meal will help take care of that sugar craving and will also provide you with vitamins, fiber, and other nutrients. Eat less of bananas, papayas or watermelon because these aren’t as nutritious than fruits like apples, berries, pomegranate, oranges and plums.
  2. Replace one meal with a salad. Have plenty of greens (the darker, the more nutritious) and add all of the vegetables you like. Some options include carrots, tomatoes, peppers, green beans, and even raw broccoli. Then add some kind of lean, grilled protein like chicken or steak. You can even add a little bit of cheese, fruit, egg white, and/or beans according to taste. Finally, top it off with a low calorie (<80 calories per tablespoon) of your favorite dressing.  The point is to make it big and tasty enough to satisfy you! Once you get the hang of it, you can change it up by mixing and matching ingredients.

  4.  Try eating fewer animal-based products. Research has demonstrated that people who eat more red meat live shorter lives compared to those who are vegetarians. The reason is that red meat and other animal products are packed with saturated fat, which in large quantities, can lead to heart disease and cancer.  Therefore, you should try to restrict eating red meat to once per week, and have more chicken and fish (or a vegetarian protein) for the rest of the time.  Also, try drinking 1% or skim (fat-free) milk, egg whites, low-fat cheese, and fat-free or low-fat yogurt.
